7 lug 2016 · I've just discovered I did find a little out about your great-uncle from his record, though probably no more than you have already. SDGW says 'killed in action' so I would still guess a shell or sniper fire. He was in C Company, where Anthony Eden was a young officer. I see his trade was 'weighing coal' and he came from a family of ten. Liz
14 feb 2010 · Anthony Eden quotes him as saying on the evening before Flers: "The real thing at last, thank goodness". I've finished the spreadsheet of the ORs killed or DOW on 15 to 17/9/1916 among 18/KRRC (based on CWGC, MIC, SDGW and census records).
7 nov 2007 · There is a good report on it also in Trevor Pidgeon's excellent book "The Tanks at Flers" (but clearly that book is about the action of the tanks but it has very good trench maps). Also, I understand that it is covered in Anthony Eden's book "Another World 1897-1917" who at the time was a subaltern in 21 KRRC. Hope this helps.
