SHAWNEE. The county seat of Pottawatomie County, Shawnee is located along the North Canadian River and six miles southeast of the intersection of U.S. Highway 177 and Interstate 40. The Creek and Seminole area originally occupied the area that was designated as Pottawatomie County in 1892.

The first buildings on the town site were a log house built in 1881 by a Louisiana trapper and a Quaker mission built in 1885 to serve the Shawnee people for whom.
