Since the early 1990s, Lujiazui has been developed specifically as a new financial district of Shanghai. The decision to earmark Lujiazui for this purpose reflects its location: it is located on the east side of the Huangpu River in Pudong, and sits directly across the river from the old financial and business district of the Bund.

This station is the first stop in Pudong going east towards Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and is part of the initial section of Line 2 that opened from Zhongshan Park to Longyang Road that opened on 20 September 1999. The station later became an interchange on 30 December 2021 after the opening of Line 14.
Lujiazui (Chinese: 陆家嘴) is a neighborhood in Pudong New District, Shanghai. Located on the southeastern bank of the Huangpu River where the river bends, Lujiazui was built upon silt deposited by the Huangpu River. Lujiazui is now the financial center of Shanghai and a major financial center of the People's Republic of China.
Many of the sights of Pudong are the large buildings of Lujiazui, all built since 1990. As of mid-2017 the area has three buildings on Wikipedia's list of the world's 50 tallest, including two in the top ten.
