Il grande maestro nacque a Leida il 15 luglio 1606, morì ad Amsterdam il 4 ottobre 1669. Era il figlio più giovane del mugnaio Harmen Gerritsz (onde è detto Harmenszoon), uomo piuttosto benestante, proprietario del mulino a vento "de Rijn" (il Reno) a Leida.
