The 2006 Winter Olympics (Italian: 2006 Olimpiadi invernali), officially the XX Olympic Winter Games (Italian: XX Giochi olimpici invernali) and also known as Torino 2006, were a winter multi-sport event held from 10 to 26 February in Turin, Italy.
With a population of more than 900,000, Turin became the largest city ever to host the Olympic Winter Games. A record 2,508 athletes from 80 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed, and 26 NOCs took home medals—another record.

To the hometown fans, the big hero was their speedskater, Enrico Fabris, who won three medals, including two gold. The biggest medal winner at Torino was another speed skater, Canadian Cindy Klassen, who won medals in five of the six speed skating events for women.
One stamp was dedicated to the Torino 2006 mascots, while the others celebrated the cities hosting Torino 2006 competitions. At the commencement of the XX Olympic Winter Games, nine additional stamps were issued, with eight depicting the Olympic winter sports and one dedicated to the Paralympics.
