William Henry Leonard Poe, often referred to as Henry Poe (January 30, 1807 – August 1, 1831), was an American sailor, amateur poet and the older brother of Edgar Allan Poe and Rosalie Poe.

3 lug 2014 · Many know Edgar Allan Poe, the esteemed poet and writer of horror and mystery fiction. Many are unaware; however, that Poe had an older brother, Henry, “The Pirate”. Nicknamed for his sailing expeditions, William Henry Leonard Poe (who went by Henry) was a sailor and a poet.
- Sotto il segno di Shakespeare. I genitori di Poe erano attori e, molto probabilmente, scelsero il suo nome ispirandosi al principe Edgar, uno dei personaggi del Re Leardi Shakespeare, tragedia che stavano portando in scena proprio nel periodo della nascita del futuro scrittore.
- Pseudonimi. Poe ne ha utilizzati molti. Tra i tanti, il primo fu Gaffy, soprannome dei tempi del college. Nei panni di Henri Le Rennet firmò la raccolta Tamerlane and Other Poems, ma soprattutto si nascose dai creditori.
- Il fratello poeta. William Henry Leonard Poe (Henry), fratello maggiore di Edgar, era un marinaio dal bicchiere facile che ha pubblicato alcune poesie e racconti in una rivista di Baltimora.
- Non portava i baffi. In effetti è difficile da immaginare, ma per la maggior parte della sua vita Poe non si è mai fatto crescere barba o baffi. Solo nel più oscuro e disperato periodo, quello che lo ha portato alla morte, iniziò a portare quei baffetti entrati poi definitivamente a far parte della sua iconografia.
