Con chiptune (o anche chip music) si indica un tipo di musica informatica scritta per formati sonori in cui tutti i suoni sono sintetizzati in tempo reale dal chip sonoro di un computer o una console.

Chiptune, also called 8-bit music, is a style of electronic music made using the programmable sound generator (PSG) sound chips or synthesizers in vintage arcade machines, computers and video game consoles. [11]
Tuttavia, non ha nulla a che fare con la musica a 8 bit. Per la musica dei vecchi videogiochi non viene utilizzata la profondità di bit; è il chip del computer stesso a generare i suoni. Ecco perché i suoni a 8 bit vengono chiamati anche chiptune o musica chip.
