The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is a graduate school of Johns Hopkins University based in Washington, D.C. with campuses in Bologna, Italy and Nanjing, China. The school is devoted to the study of international relations, diplomacy, national security, economics, and public policy.
The school was founded in 1943 by Paul H. Nitze and Christian A. Herter who sought new methods of preparing men and women to cope with the international responsibilities that would be thrust upon the United States following the end of World War II.

In his more than 50 years of public service, PAUL H. NITZE advised U.S. presidents from Roosevelt to Reagan and was a primary shaper of U.S. Cold War policy, the Marshall Plan, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He considered the co-founding of SAIS his greatest accomplishment.
