  1. The first Lakitu Mario encounters is found in Mushroom Way. This Lakitu throws Spikeys down at Mario, but cannot be attacked because it flies so high above the ground, out of Mario's jumping range (and would make for a rather challenging enemy so early in the game if it could be attacked).

/ˈlækiˌtu/ is a recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. They are Koopas that ride on a cloud, tossing Spiny Eggs below.

    Physical description

Lakitu is a Koopa Troopa with a green shell, yellow body, no beak, glasses with thick black frames, and three strands of hair, and he is seen flying in a cloud bearing a smiling face.

    Behavior

In their role as an enemy character, Lakitus fly about at a high altitude and throw Spiny Eggs at Mario. Spiny Eggs hatch into Spinies, small, red, spike‐backed Koopas. Lakitu's Cloud can be ridden for a limited time after Lakitu is defeated.

    Super Mario Bros.

Lakitus first appear in the original Super Mario Bros.. They appear in 4‐1, 6‐1, and 8‐2 and throw Spinies at Mario. Mario can defeat Lakitus by jumping on them. Only one Lakitu is present on screen at any given time, and they can be defeated by either a stomp for 800 points or a fireball for 200 points. After being defeated, it eventually respawns if the player remains idle too long. If the player is about to reach the flagpole, then Lakitu stops chasing them, and simply disappears offscreen. A Lakitu also disguises itself as Bowser in World 5-4, but the player cannot reveal it unless they hit the False Bowser with fireballs.

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels

Lakitus retain their role from Super Mario Bros. Similarly to the previous game, Lakitus first appear in the game's equivalent of World 4-1. They retain the same appearance and throw Spinies in the same way they did in the predecessor, however, they are slightly darker. However, in some of the later levels, Lakitu appears lower in the sky, making it easier for Mario or Luigi to defeat him. They also sometimes appear underwater, as seen in World 9.

    Super Mario Bros. 3

Lakitus return along with the other enemies in Super Mario Bros., following an absence from the international Super Mario Bros. 2. Lakitus first appear in Water Land, and they once again attack by dropping Spiny Eggs. Depending on the level, a Lakitu may throw one of two types of Spiny Eggs: a red egg that hatches into a Spiny on impact, or a green egg that does not hatch, but continues rolling on the ground to harm Mario. Lakitus can be defeated using the same methods as before, but are now worth 800 points upon being defeated. Lakitu's Cloud is also featured in the form of an item, and it is a single-use item allowing Mario or Luigi to skip over one level on the world map. In Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, a Lakitu also helps in e-Reader use and conversion. Whenever the player wants to scan an e-Reader card, he appears to whisk Mario away from wherever on the map he is on. This Lakitu has a slightly different appearance from the enemy Lakitus found in levels. He goes unused in the European version due to all e-Reader content being removed. He also goes unused in Virtual Console releases due to all e-Reader levels being available by default.

    Mario's Tennis

A Lakitu appears as an umpire, and its fishing pole holds a screen that shows information about the score in each match.

    Mario Power Tennis

Lakitus help retrieve balls that can no longer bounce, in the same manner as the Lakitu referee in the Mario Kart series. Lakitu appears in three of the Special Games. In Chain-Chomp Challenge, it holds the game timer to show the time remaining for the game, as well as the total score in Balloon Panic. Lakitu also initiates the Artist On the Court minigame with the countdown traffic light from

    Mario Tennis Open

Like in Mario Power Tennis, Lakitu saves balls that are incapable of bouncing any more. Lakitu has tennis gear that can be used by Miis.

Lakitus appear in all three main installments, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (including its Game Boy Advance remake Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3), Yoshi's Island DS, and Yoshi's New Island. They retain their behavior from the 2D Mario games, they toss Spiny Eggs down on Yoshi but these Spiny Eggs don't become Spinies upon hitting the...

A Lakitu is encountered in Mushroom Way, where it cannot be battled, and Booster Pass. In the overworld, it flies and drops Spiny types—Spikies in Mushroom Way or Spikesters in Booster Pass. In battle, it is able to attack up close, cast Bolt, Chomp, and Static E!.

Lakitu is the first boss of Vs. Mode in both the Game Boy and Super Nintendo Entertainment System versions.

    Mario Party

Lakitu holds a sign that shows which type of mini-game is going to be played. In the ending to Mario's Rainbow Castle, a Lakitu saves whoever ended in fourth place from falling and carries them off.

    Mario Party 2

Lakitu appears in Shy Guy Says as a visual indicator for the remaining amount of time that characters have to raise a flag. He moves from left to right and does so faster as the minigame progresses.

    Mario Party 3

A Lakitu appears during the intro and brings Mario and his friends a toy box containing the "Mario Party" board game. When the player is choosing the settings for Story Mode, three Lakitus hold the character selection, CPU difficulty option, and mini-game selection each. Lakitus appear in a few minigames. In Mario's Puzzle Party, Lakitus hand players bricks and Thwomps. In Frigid Bridges, Lakitus save whoever falls into the water. In Chip Shot Challenge, a Lakitu appears in the intro to drop a flag into the hole. In Pump, Pump and Away, Lakitus hold signs marking each 100 yard interval.

    Mario Golf (Nintendo 64)

A Lakitu has the role of being a cameraman and referee of the Speed Golf sub-game. The traffic lights used by the Lakitu referee in Mario Kart 64 can be seen at the start of the first hole of any course.

    Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Lakitu is used as catcher of balls lost to water hazards and tree hazards. One of the courses is named Lakitu Valley, despite not having any Lakitus. Lakitu serves as the referee of Speed Golf once again, this time using his traffic light from

    Mario Golf: World Tour

Lakitu retains his role of retrieving balls that fall into water hazards. He is also the referee of the Speed Golf sub-game, and utilizes his traffic light from Mario Kart 7. Additionally, Lakitu welcomes players at the Sky Island entrance, and his golf gear is available for Miis to use. Lakitu's name can also appear on the tournament scoreboard of the Castle Club, usually hanging in ranks close to last place.
