San José, capital and largest city of Costa Rica. Situated in the broad, fertile Valle Central 3,800 feet (1,160 metres) above sea level, it was called Villa Nueva when it was settled in 1736. San José developed slowly as a tobacco centre in the Spanish colonial era.
These museums allow visitors to view Costa Rican history, scientific discoveries, pre-Columbian era culture and art, as well as modern Costa Rican art. The city is also host to the nation's museum of gold and museum of jade.
As one of the youngest capitals in the region, San Jose's history is not extensive. It pales in comparison to nearby Cartago and is a thoroughly modernised centre of industry today. However, it is Costa Rica's largest city and retains a number of monuments of yesteryear, with several worthwhile historic attractions.

San José was first settled during the second quarter of the eighteenth century, principally by immigrants from Cartago. It takes its name from Saint Joseph, the patron saint of the first parish established in the Asserí Valley.
Fu Capo del Costa Rica dal 1835 al 1837 e dal 1838 al 1842. Tra i suoi più grandi meriti spiccano in particolar modo: l’aver promosso la coltivazione di caffè, l’abolizione della Legge dell’Ambulanza e l’aver fatto in modo che la capitale venisse stabilita definitivamente a San José (1835).
