William V (29 September 1548 – 7 February 1626), called the Pious, (German: Wilhelm V., der Fromme, Herzog von Bayern) was Duke of Bavaria from 1579 to 1597.
The six sons of Louis IV, ruled jointly until 1349, when they divided the land: Louis V, Louis VI and Otto VII kept Upper Bavaria; William, Albert and Stephen Lower Bavaria. In 1351 Louis VI and Otto gave up their inheritance in Bavaria, in exchange of the Electoral dignity in Brandenburg .
William I, Duke of Bavaria-Straubing (Frankfurt am Main, 12 May 1330 – 15 April 1389, Le Quesnoy), was the second son of Emperor Louis IV and Margaret II of Hainaut. He was also known as William V, Count of Holland, as William III, Count of Hainaut and as William IV, Count of Zeeland.
William IV (German: Wilhelm IV; 13 November 1493 – 7 March 1550) was Duke of Bavaria from 1508 to 1550, until 1545 together with his younger brother Louis X, Duke of Bavaria. He was born in Munich to Albert IV and Kunigunde of Austria, a daughter of Emperor Frederick III.
Duke in Bavaria (German: Herzog in Bayern) was a title used among others since 1506, when primogeniture was established [citation needed], by all members of the House of Wittelsbach, with the exception of the Duke of Bavaria which began to be a unique position.
William was born in Landshut, the son of Albert V. He was a strong supporter of the counter-reformation. Married Renata of Lorraine (1544-1602) in Munich on 22 February 1568, and had 10 children.
Wilhelm is the eldest child of Friedrich, Hereditary Duke of Württemberg (1961–2018) and Princess Marie Wilhelmine of Wied (born 1973). He was baptised in September 1994 with his uncles Erich, Prince of Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg, and Prince Wilhelm of Wied, as his godfathers.
