American Splendor was the first narrative feature film of married filmmakers Springer Berman and Pulcini, who had previously made documentaries. It was also the first theatrical release of HBO Films. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2003, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.
