Some time afterwards, a brick kiln workers’ union asked Tahira Apa for help, and she gave them the red brick building in Temple Road in the heart of Lahore that housed Viewpoint. Clearly, she was not one to just pay lip service to the workers’ cause.
Tahira was the daughter of Punjabi feudal landlord and Unionist Party (Punjab) politician Sikander Hayat Khan who had also served as provincial prime minister of Punjab in British India from 1937 to 1942. After their marriage, Tahira stayed active socially and politically and was publicly known as Tahira Mazhar Ali.

Tarık Ali, Hindistan'ın İngiliz sömürgesi olduğu dönemde Lahor, Pencap'ta doğdu ve büyüdü. Babası gazeteci Mazhar Ali Han, annesi de aktivist Tahira Mazhar Ali Han'dı. Ali'nin annesi Tahira, İttihatçı Müslüman Birliği'ne liderlik eden, 1937'den 1942'ye kadar Pencap başbakanı olan Sir Sikandar Hyat Han'ın kızıydı.
