Students in this concentration are required to take at least 18 credits of courses approved for the concentration, including the 3-credit course, MSFS 570 – Practice of Policy Tradecraft, in the spring semester of year one. Concentrators must take at least 3 credits in each subfield and at least 9 credits in one primary subfield.

Over 50% of our graduate students receive some funding from Georgetown University in order to attend. Our students also utilize external funding opportunities from private foundations and government fellowships, in addition to loans.
Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service conferred the first graduate degree in international affairs in 1922, pre-dating the U.S. State Department’s adoption of the term “foreign service.” Since then, more than 4,000 students have completed the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) degree.
