    The beginning of Eclipse seems somewhat overdone, but it settles down nicely into a surprisingly powerful tale. Banville unlooses not a torrent but a bubbling brook of language. The story moves along beautifully, with constant shifts, ripples, and sparkles, right to its dramatic end. A fine book, certainly recommended.
