Newnham college buildings from the gardens. Newnham College is one of the colleges of the University of Cambridge, England. It is for women only and has about 500 students. It was created in 1871 by Henry Sidgwick who wanted to make education more available to women. It was built at a time when most colleges where for men only.

Newnham continues to be a women's college dedicated to the charitable purposes of education, learning and research. For the most part, Newnham’s paintings represent donations and bequests made by alumnae and benefactors although portrait commissions are undertaken by the College from time to time.
The right for Cambridge University’s women students to be awarded degree was a subject of a long-drawn-out struggle. Anne Jemima Clough, who is commemorated in the magnificent bronze gates at the college, was an early English suffragist and a promoter of higher education for women. She was the first principal of Newnham College.
