About this Site. A Vision of Britain through Time brings together historical surveys of the British Isles to create a record of how these islands and their localities have changed. It was created by Humphrey Southall and the Great Britain Historical GIS Project ("GIS" stands for "Geographical Information System").
The project is currently based at the University of Portsmouth, and is the provider of the website A Vision of Britain through Time. NB: A "GIS" is a geographic information system , which combines map information with statistical data to produce a visual picture of the iterations or popularity of a particular set of statistics, overlaid on a map of the geographic area of interest.
Although the initial view of the twentieth century maps is centered on Britain, their top two layers cover the whole of Europe so there is plenty more to see.
