Reid was a real-life Londoner, born in Hackney, East London, in 1940. A few months after his birth, his family were forced by the blitz bombings to leave their home and Reid spent his formative years in Tottenham.

The actor, who played Frank Butcher in the BBC soap, was living in Spain at the time of his death. Reid became a stand-up comedian having worked as a stunt man.

The 67-year-old's coffin was carried into Little Easton Parish Church, Essex, accompanied by his 1970s chart hit Ugly Duckling.
