It connects to the Chihli and Liaodong gulfs by the Strait of Chihli. The Huang He, Liao, and Yalu rivers drain into it; the yellow loess (fine-grained silt) from these rivers give the sea its popular name.
The Yellow Sea is rich in seaweed, clams, crustaceans, cephalopods, and blue-green algae. The surface area of the Yellow Sea is 380,000km2 making the sea larger than Germany. The average depth of the sea is 44 m and the maximum depth is 152 m. The Yellow Sea shares its basin with North Korea, South Korea, and China.
