Cliff Martinez has strong roots in rock music, having begun his career as the drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. But, after reflecting on his love for the soundtrack of A Fistful of Dollars, Martinez broadened his musical scope as film composer behind scores for such films and television series as Spring Breakers, Sex, Lies and Videotape and The Knick.
MARTINEZ: Initially, I had Nicolas come over to the house and I played it a little for him. He commented that it had a "religious quality" for him and I made a note of that for future reference. I had already been thinking about using the crystal for the aforementioned love theme, but the religious connotation was a new angle and I decided to emphasize that quality.
Nicolas Winding Refn and Cliff Martinez are one of the best director/composer duos working in the industry, and are bringing the spotlight back to auteur filmmaking in a time where studio-curated franchises dominate theaters. The two have worked together on Drive and Only God Forgives, and The Neon Demon marks their third collaboration together.
