Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones est née le 20 janvier 1965, à Oxford. Elle est le second enfant et l'unique fille de Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones, le directeur des ventes d'un importateur de pneumatiques à la retraite 2, et de Mary O'Sullivan, secrétaire et activiste caritative, morte en 2005. Le couple avait déjà un fils, prénommé David.
Sophie is de dochter van Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones en (wijlen) Mary Rhys-Jones. Ze is geboren met de naam Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones. Ze heeft een oudere broer, David Rhys-Jones.
