On 3 January 1887 August Robert Ludwig Macke is born in the small town of Meschede in the Westphalian countryside. His two sisters Auguste and Ottilie are several years older. The father is a self-employed building contractor; the mother comes from a farmstead. Macke grows up in Cologne, then in Bonn.
August Robert Ludwig Macke was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter. He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe.

He was one of the many who fell fighting for their country during World War I. Despite his short artistic career of eight years, he produced over 600 paintings and 9000 drawings.

Macke had already produced a first version of this theme, possibly based on a real event, in the small gouache entitled Fall dated 1911 and in a somewhat earlier charcoal drawing. Ursula Heiderich regards these compositions as a return to the traditional theme of the Pieta, evidencing the interest Macke always felt in the great masters of the past.
