Denis Diderot, French man of letters and philosopher who, from 1745 to 1772, served as chief editor of the Encyclopedie, one of the principal works of the Age of Enlightenment. Diderot wrote novels, short stories, and plays as well as treatises on natural science. He is also regarded as the first great art critic.

Nato da famiglia piccolo-borghese, venne messo a studiare dai gesuiti prima a Langres, poi al collegio d'Harcourt di Parigi. Destinato alla carriera ecclesiastica, preferì l'avvocatura cui si dedicò però, conclusi gli studi, solo per pochi anni (1732-34).

Inizialmente in questo lavoro di ideazione e coordinamento, Diderot fu afffiancato dal matematico Jean-Baptiste d’Alembert (1717-1783), che scrisse il Discorso preliminare (1751) dell’Enciclopedia, più tardi invece da Paul Henry Dietrich, barone d’Holbach (1723-1789).
