The history of Oldham / ˈ oʊ l d əm / is one of dramatic change, from obscure Pennine hamlet to preeminent mill town and textile processing capital of the world. Oldham 's industrial history includes hatting , coal mining , structural engineering , mechanical engineering , textile machinery manufacture and cotton spinning - for which the town is most noted.
The Lancashire Family History Society was established in 1973. This society has 12 branches (plus one in London). There is a small fee for membership and benefits include a free Quarterly Magazine, free attendance at branch meetings (at the time of writing) and free attendance at all of the conferences the society holds.
