In 1870, Gabriel Hargo became the second African American to graduate from the school, making Michigan the largest law school in the country to do so. The University of Michigan Law School was the first major law school to admit a woman in 1871.

Many of its faculty members hold advanced degrees in other fields and have dual appointments with other schools and departments in the University.
