House & Family History: Ashdown was built as a hunting lodge, or villa, in the classical style by William, 1st Earl of Craven, for Elizabeth, the Winter Queen of Bohemia (sister of Charles I). Lord Craven was apparently in love in Elizabeth, though she died in 1662 before construction for the house even began.
The Ashdown House continued to be used as a hunting lodge during the years but it functioned a basis for American soldiers in the II World War. Unfortunately, the soldiers removed the wooden paneling and there is hardly any original fitting left apart from the famous staircase.
You have to go on an official tour which is led by a volunteer guide. The tour takes the best part of an hour and is essentially a very slow walk up a grand staircase with references made to the historic portraits on display. There is no access to any of the rooms, The tour ends on the roof, with views over the countryside.

Automobile Parking – Ashdown residents can park at the Sidney-Pacific dorm’s lot (entry is on Sidney St). The MIT Parking office (ph. 617-258-6510) is located in the Atlas Service Center (E17, 40 Ames St). Hours: 8:00am-6pm.
