The Courtauld Institute of Art was founded in 1931 with a gift of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including Édouard Manet ’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882) and Vincent van Gogh ’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889), from the wealthy silk manufacturer Samuel Courtauld.
Both the Gallery and Art Café can be directly accessed via The Strand entrance of Somerset House. The Courtauld is in walking distance of Trafalgar Square, Shaftesbury Avenue, Covent Garden and Bloomsbury – hubs of art, education and culture that are enhanced by the Strand Aldwych pedestrianisation project.
