The series was the first of several dramatizations of the "Para Handy" stories, being followed by The Vital Spark in 1965–66 (remade in 1973–74) starring Roddy McMillan in the title role, and by The Tales of Para Handy in 1994–95, starring Gregor Fisher. Roddy McMillan was widely known for his acting on the big screen. McMillan started off his career in film with roles in "High and Dry" (1954) and "The Battle of the Sexes" (1960). He went on to act in "The Mouse on the Moon" (1963) with Margaret Rutherford, the Charles Bronson western "Chato's Land" (1971) and "Killer With Two Faces" (ABC, 1974-75).

Roddy McMillan (23 March 1923 – 9 July 1979) was a Scottish actor and playwright, possibly most famous for his comedy role as Para Handy for BBC Scotland's television series "The Vital Spark" (1965 - 1974). He also played the lead role in Edward Boyd's private eye series "The View from Daniel Pike" (early 1970s).
