  5. St Edmund’s College is the oldest Catholic school in England, with a distinguished alumni of 20 canonised saints and 133 martyrs. Founded in 1568 as the English College in Douay, France by Cardinal William Allen, the College was intended to be a seminary to train priests. Eventually it also became a Catholic school for boys.
