AeroSHARK is a durable bionic film that successfully mimics the skin of sharks and optimizes the airflow thus enabling significant fuel savings. Together with the leading global chemicals and coatings manufacturer BASF, we developed a functional biomimetic technology: a film with a barely perceptible ribbed texture of small protrusions – riblets.

A profiled grinding wheel has been used to fabricate several riblet geometries based on sawtooth riblets with h = 20 μm and s = 50 μm [ 15 ].

Lufthansa Technik and BASF first fitted almost the entire lower half of a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400's fuselage with 500 square meters of a biomimetic sharkskin surface and had this modification certified by EASA.
