Il titolo è un chiaro riferimento all'opera scultorea nota come il Galata morente, celebre copia marmorea romana di un'opera ellenistica, databile intorno al 230-220 a. C. circa ed ormai perduta, realizzata dallo scultore di Pergamo Epigono.
