Während seiner Schul- und Studienzeit war Sam Hunt ein erfolgreicher American-Football -Spieler und spielte als Quarterback für die Middle Tennessee State University und die University of Alabama at Birmingham. Nach Ende seiner Ausbildung entschied er sich aber gegen eine mögliche Sportlerkarriere und wandte sich stattdessen der Musik zu.
