19 lug 2021 · The Lamech who took two wives mentioned in Genesis 4 is descended from Adam’s murderous son, Cain. After Cain killed his brother Abel, God cursed Cain and sent him out to wander the earth.

The poem that Lamech composed for his wives (Ge 4:23, 24) reflects the violent spirit of that day. Lamech’s poem ran: “Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech; give ear to my saying: A man I have killed for wounding me, yes, a young man for giving me a blow. If seven times Cain is to be avenged, then Lamech seventy times and seven.”
With Gen 5:29 it seems Lamech almost knew something in advance. Genesis 5:29 And he (Lamech) called his name Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed." Other than Adam, Lamech is the only father before the flood we get a quote from.
Lamech, however, allayed their fears, saying: "Have I slain a man or a youth that my offspring should be destroyed? If Cain shall expiate his crime after seven generations, surely Lamech, who killed no one, shall expiate his sins after seventy-seven generations." This interpretation was adopted by Onḳelos and pseudo-Jonathan.
There are two Lamechs mentioned in the Bible: The last mentioned father in the line of Cain (Genesis 4:18). This Lamech has two wives: Adah, the mother of Jabal the arch-tent-dweller and Jubal the arch-musician, and Zillah, the mother of Tubal-cain the smith and his sister Naamah.
Lamech was the son of Methuselah. He became the father of both sons and daughters. He named his son Noah “for he shall be a comfort to us”.
