27 mar 2017 · Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Bell. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first met Dr. Joseph Bell in 1877 whilst he was a medical student and he served as a clerk for him for a time. Bell became Doyle’s mentor and he spent a great deal of time observing Bell’s celebrated deductive abilities. In many ways, he was Dr Watson to Bell’s Sherlock Holmes.

Joseph Bell was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, and entered Edinburgh University when he was 16, passing his final examinations before he was 21. Since childhood he would have heard from his father in glowing terms about the University of Leyden in Holland, from which the Edinburgh Medical School derived, and which still attracted ambitious young doctors from all over Europe.

His studious nature is what allowed him to make it through the class of one James Gloag, a math teacher at Edinburgh Academy who had a penchant for beating his students with a type of leather whip known as a "tawse," according to The Real Life Sherlock Holmes: A Biography of Joseph Bell.
Dr. Joseph Bell died at his country house, Mauricewood, Milton Bridge, Midlothian, on October 4th. His health broke down in February last, and although he rallied and was able to be out to enjoy a drive, he did not resume practice.
