In 1943, the secret of Crickley Hall is revealed when Augustus gases all the orphans to death, except Stefan who escapes and causes Augustus to fall to his death after hitting him with the very cane that Augustus used to brutally beat the orphans. Augustus, unable to stand up after this fall, drowns to death.
