Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe.

Max Ernst, fiul unui pictor care lucra la o școală de surdo-muți, s-a născut la 2 aprilie 1891 în orășelul Brühl, lângă Köln. În anul 1908 începe să studieze Filosofia, Psihologia și Istoria Artelor la Universitatea din Bonn, unde îi va cunoaște pe pictorul August Macke - care îl introduce în grupul "Der Blaue Reiter" ("Călărețul albastru") - și pe sculptorul Hans Arp ...
Max Ernst was born on April 2, 1891, in Brühl, Germany. He enrolled in the University at Bonn in 1909 to study philosophy, but soon abandoned this pursuit to concentrate on art.
