Raphael Holinshed (1529 - 1580) was an English chronicler, whose work, commonly known as Holinshed's Chronicles, was one of the major sources used by William Shakespeare for a number of his plays. He is thought to have come from Cheshire, but lived in London, where he worked as a translator for the printer Reginald Wolfe.
27 lug 2015 · The censorship of this, the second edition of Holinshed's Chronicles, is extensively documented. Numerous leaves -- primarily in the third volume -- were cancelled (excised) and replaced with less politically sensitive versions of the missing passages contained therein. This process resulted in several irregular sequences of pagination.

While Raphael Holinshed was the chief author, or arranger, of the 1577 edition of the Chronicles, and while for convenience's sake he is referred to as the author of the three-volume 1587 edition excerpted here, the work was the product of about a dozen authors and compiled after Holinshed's death from a wide range of sources, mostly meticulously cited in marginal notes.
