Her father, Landgrave Friedrich, was the youngest son of Princess Mary (February 22, 1723 – January 14, 1772), the third daughter of George II of Great Britain. In 1803, her uncle assumed the title of Elector of Hesse-Cassel — whereby the whole extended Hesse-Cassel dynasty gained an upward notch in hierarchy, including young Augusta.

Personal life. On 13 February 1797 in Berlin, William married Princess Augusta of Prussia, fourth daughter of King Frederick William II of Prussia. They had six children: Wilhelm (1798–1800), who died in infancy. Karoline (1799–1854) Luise (1801–1803), who died in infancy. Friedrich (1802–1875), later Elector of Hesse.
