Alessandro Farnese nacque a Roma il 27 agosto del 1545 dal nobile Ottavio Farnese (1524-1586), nipote di papa Paolo III (1534-1549), e da Margherita d'Austria (1521-1586), figlia naturale, successivamente legittimata, di Carlo V d'Asburgo (1500-1558) e della sua amante fiamminga Giovanna van der Gheynst (1500-1541).
