The school was once under the authority of New Orleans Public Schools, but fell under the authority of the Recovery School District. In 2012, Walter L. Cohen High School became part of New Orleans College Prep, a charter school operator headquartered in New Orleans.

It was very hard for me and my friends because teachers were absent in many core classes like Chemistry, U.S History, and Pre Calculus. Senior.
College Beyond was founded in 2015 by Paris Woods and Sarah Payne, two college access educators working at Walter L. Cohen College Prep High School. We served 45 students in our first year, and today are proud to serve more than 400 New Orleans area college students each year

Its alumni group has been active in the school, and Walter L. Cohen Alumni Association president serves on the charter group’s nonprofit board.
