A mini-musical in three acts, this 35mm film grew out of distinct periods in Simmons’s photographic work. Vintage child-craft puppets enact the pain and regret that erupt between two feuding families.
The Music of Regret is about examining a type of perfection, which is a kind of regret because it’s unattainable. It’s something my mother always had—wishing that she had done this or that. My mother’s feeling of ‘would have, should have, could have’ became the basis for the lyrics of the song “Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda” in the film version of The Music of Regret .
15 mag 2024 · Simmons’s first film, The Music of Regret (2006), extends her photographic practice to performance, incorporating musicians, professional puppeteers, Alvin Ailey dancers, Hollywood cinematographer Ed Lachman, and actress Meryl Streep.
Currently available on the Criterion Channel in a pristine print, this 44-minute film is divided into three short Acts, performed by puppets. In Act I, the unexpected sources of regret among selfish individual puppet characters carry considerable emotional weight, with no humans on camera to dwarf the evident suffering of the little figurines.

The story revolves mostly around the turmoil caused by two feuding families, but also features a ballad on the subject of dependency and communication, as well as anthropomorphic pocket watches.
