Rather than a whodunit, it’s a whatwillshedoaboutit; the film sustains tension not just in Valerie’s cover-up but in her interior grappling with remorse and insecurity. Claire Trevor plays the obsessive actress Marian Webster, who was in love with Dunning, and Leo Genn plays Michael Morrell, the wealthy architect who steals Valerie’s heart but may know more than she thinks.
The plot of "Touch'' sounds like a comedy. But the experience of seeing the film is subduing; the movie plays in a muted key. Actors like Tom Arnold, who approach their characters more broadly, sound like they're talking too loudly in church. The dominant tone is set by Skeet Ulrich, as Juvenal: He's sweet, soft-spoken, not sure what it all means.

But at least von Sydow gets the film's best joke - and in its first hour, it is quite full of humor, some of it even funny - when he's flipping through photographic slides with the oblivious sincerity of a bad host, and clumsily notes that his mother-in-law has just died, when her photo shows up.
