29 mar 1982 · General Nathan Farragut Twining was born in Monroe, Wisconsin on October 11, 1897. His forebears served in the United States Army and Navy since the French and Indian War. In 1913, he moved with his family to Oswego, Oregon, serving in the Oregon National Guard from 1915 to 1917. In 1917, he received an appointment to West Point.

In January 1989 TAAS accepted the donation of the four acres and ownership of the “Isengard” telescope. The new observatory was named after Nathan Twining’s father General Nathan Farragut Twining, who was a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Eisenhower, and who had passed away in 1982.

Nathan Farragut Twining (October 11, 1897 – March 29, 1982) was a United States Air Force general. He served as the Air Force's Chief of Staff from 1953 to 1957, then as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1957 to 1960.
