Maggior generale nel 1880, prese parte alla campagna d'Egitto nel 1882, comandando la brigata delle Guardie alla battaglia di Tell el-Kebir. Ebbe alti comandi in India, Inghilterra e Irlanda, e fu promosso maresciallo nel 1893. Nel 1904 fu nominato ispettore generale e dal 1907 al 1909 fu a Malta come comandante in capo nel Mediterraneo.
