Friedrich Ebert setzte sich mehr und mehr dafür ein, die sozialen Missstände im Land zu bekämpfen und hielt aus diesem Grund staatliche Hilfen als unverzichtbar. So gelang es ihm ab 1900 eine Anstellung als Arbeitersekretär bei der Bremer Gewerkschaft zu ergattern, wodurch er seine gastwirtschaftliche Tätigkeit, mit der er nie warm geworden war, aufgeben konnte.
