Introduction. Martin Bucer (b. 1491–d. 1551) is one of the most important, though neglected, Protestant reformers of the 16th century. His role during this time was significant, and only recently has he been given the attention he deserves. Most scholarship on Bucer has generally followed three main trajectories.
His father was a barrel-maker and his mother a midwife. Martin Bucer became a Dominican and studied theology for ten years. He met Luther in 1518 and adopted his ideas. After leaving the Dominicans he married a former nun, and was excommunicated. Then he went to Strasbourg where he set up Bible reading classes and presented the Reformation in 1529.
Martin Bucer by German School, circa 1650-1689 Unfortunately, Bucer’s work at Strasbourg was cut short in 1547–48 by Charles V’s crushing victory over the Protestant princes at the Battle of Mühlberg.
Yet, Martin Bucer remains for those less acquainted with Reformation history something of a footnote in the life of John Calvin. As Herman J. Selderhuis notes in the introduction to this volume, “research of the biography and theology of Martin Bucer … can still be called rather new” (p. 15). This brings us then to the aim of this book.
