Ingraham was born to Gordon Ingraham and Elizabeth Wright Ingraham. Ingraham was raised in Colorado and earned her doctorate at Johns Hopkins University . Ingraham has held academic appointments at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Iowa State University and been a visiting professor at Princeton , the GSD , and Columbia University , before joining Pratt as chair in 1999.
Elizabeth Wright Ingraham (1922 – September 15, 2013) was an American architect and educator. A granddaughter of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright , she studied under his tutelage at his Taliesin studio at age 15.

In 1948, she moved from Chicago with her husband, Gordon Ingraham, who studied with Wright at Taliesin, to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they opened a practice together. As Ingraham & Ingraham, Architects, they designed and built over 80 projects.
