  2. Winchester College is an English public school (a long-established fee-charging boarding school for pupils aged 13–18) with some provision for day attendees, in Winchester, Hampshire, England. It was founded by William of Wykeham in 1382 as a feeder school for New College, Oxford, and has existed in its present location ever since.

  3. The great churchman, William of Wykeham, raised this tower as the architect of Windsor Castle, working under the commands of his patron, Edward III. It is further said that, the King being offended at this inscription, its more obvious meaning was dextrously explained away, seeing that it should be interpreted to record that the building of the castle was "the making" of the architect.

  5. The Foundation. New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham (1324-1404), Bishop of Winchester, as The College of St Mary of Winchester in Oxford. It very soon became known as New College to distinguish it from an earlier Oxford college (Oriel, founded 1326) also dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
