Rispetto a Eraserhead, The Elephant Man (1980) costituisce un cambiamento di scala alquanto sorprendente. Lynch passa da un'opera quasi sperimentale, dominata da un'originalità radicale e spesso disturbante, a un film di stampo hollywoodiano, con un budget abbastanza confortante e una narrazione nettamente più classica.
The Elephant man si colloca a metà strada, cronologicamente parlando, fra lo sperimentalismo estremo di Eraserhead e il fallimento commerciale di Dune. E' un film in cui Lynch si adegua alle esigenze del plot e dei meccanismi più commerciali del cinema senza però snaturare sè stesso e lo dimostra fin da subito nella sequenza iniziale degli elefanti, visionaria e disturbante.
