McKellen attended St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where as a student actor he was often directed by John Barton, later of the Royal Shakespeare Company .
Ian McKellen is returning to Shakespeare with a new stage adaptation of "Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2".Robert Icke will adapt and direct McKellen as John Falstaff in the production, Player Kings, which comes to the West End in spring 2024.
